Use this candle to envision and create a future where we care for one another deeply , where we engage in economies of abundance rather than scarcity. This candle was inspired by the writings of Dr. Robin Wall Kimerer and the gift economies and systems of reciprocity practiced by the indigenous inhabitants of Oceania, Polynesia, and Melanesia. Gift economies are predicated on social relationships and kinship bonds. The act of gift giving opens a reciprocal channel between two or more parties that can be sustained indefinitely, as opposed to market economies which are transactional and degrade relational bonds.

This ritual evokes the sensory experience of arriving on distant shores laden with fragrant flowers, sun soaked driftwood, and fresh fruit. It invites us to ask how we can feed relationships of care that are sustainable and generative not only for us but for the earth, our ancestors, and those who will come after us.

“To name the world as gift is to feel one’s membership in the web of reciprocity. It makes you happy—and it makes you accountable. Conceiving of something as a gift changes your relationship to it in a profound way, even though the physical makeup of the “thing” has not changed. A woolly knit hat that you purchase at the store will keep you warm regardless of its origin, but if it was hand knit by your favorite auntie, then you are in relationship to that “thing” in a very different way: you are responsible for it, and your gratitude has motive force in the world. You’re likely to take much better care of the gift hat than the commodity hat, because it is knit of relationships. This is the power of gift thinking. I imagine if we acknowledged that everything we consume is the gift of Mother Earth, we would take better care of what we are given. Mistreating a gift has emotional and ethical gravity as well as ecological resonance.”- Dr. Robin Wall Kimerer, THE SERVICEBERRY: an economy of abundance

//THE RITUAL//

start by grounding yourself in the sensuous elements of the ritual. close your eyes and take the candle in both hands. notice the cool smoothness of the glass against your fingers. take a deep inhale; does the smell remind you of a certain time or place? once you feel centered in your body start to visualize your intention. speak your intention into the wax, and as you light the wick imagine the wax as your pure intention, sustaining the flame until it has all been released. when the wax has been used up, you will be left with herbs and a crystal steeped in your intention. you may return the herbs to the earth as an offering at a sacred site. the crystal is now a talisman imbued with your specific energy, carry it with you for a daily reminder of your power.

ritual intention creates a ripple. each time the intention is set through ritual practice another ripple is added to the sequence. it grows and grows until it starts to effect the world around it, a wave now, it draws things in and pushes things away. that is the magic. what’s even more magical is that daily rituals create new neural pathways in our brains. over time our brains adapt to our new habits, and in this way we are rebuilt and reborn through ritual intention setting!
